I decided to apply for the Advanced Rider Course partly as a refresher for my riding skills, but also because I was aware of how much road use had changed since I passed my motorbike test in September 1985, nearly 41 years ago.

At first, my previous instruction about riding was hard to shift from my head, so Charlie kept reiterating his advice and guidance. Looking back, I was riding submissively and letting other traffic and road users take the lead.

Charlie helped me think more positively about my riding and encouraged me to position myself more confidently on the road, while staying fully aware of the traffic, road furniture, and the road ahead and around me.

My confidence grew, my knowledge grew, and my use of the road improved. Since completing the course and passing my Advanced Rider Test, I now ride with passion and as an active road user. I feel better able to manage the impact of other road users, fully engage with every journey, and I have reignited my passion for riding with more flair and aptitude for advanced riding.

Prior to the course, I had very low confidence when driving and had done very little driving in the previous 12 months.

I initially completed a Mature Driver’s Assessment, and based on that drive, the observer suggested I consider enrolling on the IAM course.

I’m really glad I did. Neil Scarlett was a tremendous observer: supportive, patient, and encouraging throughout.

Over the five months, his skill and knowledge, combined with the structure of the course, helped rebuild my confidence completely.

Before taking the Advanced Motorcycle Course, I could ride from A to B, but looking back, I realise I wasn’t truly riding to a proper standard. I experienced a few near misses with other road users, which made me aware that something needed to change.

Through the course, I learned how to read the road accurately, anticipate the unexpected, and better predict the intentions of other road users. These essential skills have made me a far more confident, capable, and safer motorcyclist.

These are not skills you simply pick up on your own; they are developed through dedicated teaching, coaching, and guidance from committed observers like yourself. I am incredibly grateful for the time, effort, and encouragement you gave me in helping me reach the advanced rider standard.

Having now passed my IAM RoadSmart test with a First, I would like to thank Neil Scarlett for his excellent instruction and wealth of experience. His guidance made a real difference to my development and confidence.

I would also like to thank Sharon for conducting a pre-test, which proved invaluable in preparing me for the real assessment.

The course itself was very well structured: interesting, enjoyable, and highly informative, even though I only had four sessions before my test.

With over 60 years of driving experience around the world, I can honestly say you are never too experienced to learn something new: as they say, every day is a school day.

I believe the course and test deserve to be promoted more widely, particularly to younger drivers. Perhaps introducing a young person’s discount could help encourage greater participation.

I first experienced the NSADR team when I met Shaz, Ian, and the group at the Trentham Classic Car Show. I had been considering taking my Advanced Driving course for some time, and after retiring from Staffordshire Police in 1998 following 30 years of service, I felt it was the right time to renew and enhance my driving skills.

Signing up with NSADR has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I passed my course on 1st February with a FiRST, and throughout the process the Observers made me feel completely at ease. Their dedication and support are outstanding.
